The application deadline for the autumn semester 2016 has expired.  The following candidates can, however, make a late application until the 31st August 2016.

  • candidates with Swiss qualifications
  • candidates with foreign qualifications who are not required to :
    • obtain a visa in order to study in Switzerland (Countries whose citizens require a visa)
    • nor obliged to pass the entrance examination (Complementary examination of Swiss universities) (the list of countries gives information concerning those certificates which must be complemented by the entrance examination (Complementary examination of Swiss universities))
    • nor obliged to prove that they possess sufficient language skills (the
      list of countries gives information concerning those certificates which must be complemented by the language test).

Candidates with foreign qualifications are not required to prove sufficient language skills for master programmes. Exception: master programmes at theFaculty of Law and Master of Arts in European Business

Proof of sufficient language skills

French and German are the official teaching languages of the University of Fribourg at the Bachelor level (English is used for certain master programmes) and are the languages used by the administration.

The University requires that future students in all study programmes have sufficient skills in French, German or English to be able to follow lectures and express themselves correctly, both orally and in writing, within the context of their university studies.

The required level corresponds to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages established by the Council of Europe.

Foreign candidates for master programmes are not required to prove their linguistic skills, with the following exceptions:

Procedure and payement

Candidates with Swiss qualifications: When you apply online you may pay CHF 100.- (application fee: CHF 50.- and late application fee: CHF 50.-) by credit card. You can also make your payment by interbank transfer using the account details printed on the invoice. If you choose this option you must include proof of payment with the other documents required to complete your application.

Candidates with foreign qualifications: When you apply online you may pay CHF 150.- (application fee: CHF 100.- and late application fee: CHF 50.-) by credit card. You can also make your payment by interbank transfer using the account details printed on the invoice. If you choose this option you must include proof of payment with the other documents required to complete your application. 

No application for admission will be handled without payment of the fees. 

Application procedure

As soon as we have received your documents, you will get an acknowledgment by e-mail. We will send you a written decision by postal mail once the admission procedure will be completed. No information concerning the advancement of your dossier can be given by phone or by e-mail.

1a. Application

Please apply online and validate your application by the official deadline. Respect these deadlines even if you have not completed your studies or obtained your final qualifications. Do not wait until the last minute, the procedure can take several weeks.

1b. Payment of the application fee

When you apply online you may pay the application fee of CHF 100.- by credit card. You can also make your payment by interbank transfer using the account details printed on the invoice. If you choose this option you must include proof of payment with the other documents required to complete your application.

2. Expedition of the documents required for the handling of the application for admission

Officially certified copies and translations originating from outside Switzerland can only be accepted for admission purposes if they have been legalized by one of the following:

  • Swiss consulate or embassy in the country of origin of the applicant
  • Public offices in the country of origin of the applicant that are entitled to endorse documents under the Hague Apostille convention.

Original documents in a language other than French, German, Italian or English must be translated into German or French and these translations must be certified.

You find here the list of the documents that must be joined to your application for admission. At the end of the online application, this list will be personalized based on your personal information.

3. Handling of the application for admission and decision

When we have received all of the documents required, your application will be handled initially by:

  • the Office for Admissions and Registration who will formally analyse your application and decide whether or not you may be admitted to a master programme;
  • then the faculty concerned will take a decision concerning your admission to the chosen master programme;

When your application has been returned by the faculty we shall mail you a written decision. This procedure can last several weeks.

4. Application for a visa

If you are citizen of a country subject to hold a visa, you must make an application for a visa before entering Switzerland to the appropriate Swiss diplomatic or consular representation in your country of domicile.

5. Sitting the Language test

If your admission is subject to passing the Language test, you will need to come to Switzerland two weeks before the beginning of semester to sit the language test.

6. Presentation of the original version of your qualifications

In all cases, before the beginning of semester, you must present the original version of the qualifications required for admission, either by:

  • post;
  • personally presenting the documents during the opening hours of the Office for Admissions and Registration.

7. Handling of the application for admission and decision

When we have received all of the documents required, we shall consider your application for admission and mail you a written decision.

8. Expedition of the invoice for the semester tuition fee

About the end of July, you will receive an invoice for the payment of the semester tuition fee which should be remitted within the deadline.

9. Access to university facilities / beginning of studies

Along with your bill you will receive information concerning your e-Account which you must activate.

Once you have paid the semester tuition fee (but at the very earliest one week after payment) you can:

• enrol for courses;
• receive a Campus Card;
• print your attestation of registration at MyData

10. Authorisation of your stay

As soon as you have arrived in Switzerland, you are obliged to declare your arrival and to submit an application for authorization to stay in Switzerland to the "Service de la population et des migrants" (SpoMi).
