24th World Congress of Political Science - Challenging Democracy, 23 – 28 July 2016, Istanbul, Turkey

Publish Date: Sep 15, 2015

Deadline: Sep 25, 2015

Event Dates: from Jul 23, 2016 12:00 to Jul 28, 2016 12:00

As every year, we – the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) – welcome papers from political science, international relations and related fields from students and young scholars for our panels to be held at the upcoming 24th World Congress of Political Science of the International Political Science Association (IPSA), from 23 – 28 July, 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey. We encourage applications focussing on conceptual, theoretical and empirical connections between democracy and inequality from students coming from all around the globe. We are also looking for one discussant and one chairperson per panel.

The panels hosted by IAPSS are based on the Congress’ theme ‘Politics in a World of Inequality’ and the thematic framework of IAPSS’ Annual Theme 2016 ‘Challenging Democracy’.

The Theme & Topics Addressed:

Democracy is the standard against which all governments across the world are measured. It is, however, not without flaws and has so far failed to provide solutions for global economic inequality, changing expectations of the welfare state and fluctuations in public support for redistribution. How is democracy affected by inequality? Can and should democracy be improved, and if so, how? Are there better alternatives to democracy in order to promote redistribution and recognition of different regional, religious, cultural and national groups? How can challenging democracy inform new studies into contemporary governance of politics in a world of inequality?

The key topics we will address are (but are not limited to):

  • legitimacy;
  • identity
  • inclusion/exclusion;
  • social movements and responses;
  • models of democracy and regime types;
  • public policy approaches;
  • participatory democracy and grassroots constitutionalism
  • democratic transitions
  • impediments to democratic development
  • democratic legitimacy of supranational and intergovernmental governance
  • new forms of democracy (direct democracy, deliberative democracy, etc.)
