Summer School - Writing for Publication, 2022, Babel Language Institute, Netherlands

Publish Date: May 08, 2022

Deadline: Jul 11, 2022

Event Dates: from Jul 18, 2022 12:00 to Jul 29, 2022 12:00

During your academic career, publishing your work is of great importance. Following our Writing for Publication course will enable you to improve your written academic discourse by increasing your awareness of organisation, cohesion, advanced academic vocabulary, and use of language. In this advanced level course, you will work on your own completed draft, improving it step by step. By the end of the course, you will have become aware of your language needs through analysis, practical tips, critical reading, peer review and discussion.
During this course you will become aware of your strengths and weaknesses as an academic writer, and look at strategies to improve in the areas you perhaps struggle with. Your own written texts will be used as a basis for the writing assignments in this course and you will receive feedback on your work from both the language trainer and the other participants. We will look at academic writing as a process, from the ideas stage to the final submission.

The course focuses on:

  • expanding your academic vocabulary
  • improving academic writing skills
  • revising knowledge of grammar
  • expressing ideas in an academic format
  • tips for submitting your paper

The course is suitable for people who have reached CEFR level C1 and who are currently writing research in English. You will need to have a text in English to work on to join the group. It does not have to be finished, but it should have at least some introductory and (preliminary) discussion paragraphs ready for editing. If you have not yet completed the results and methods sections, this is less important, as the language usage here tends to be relatively formulaic.
To check your level, you will need to take the Babel placement test. This test consists of two parts: multiple choice questions and writing tasks. A teacher will assess your language skills. On the basis of your test result, you will be advised on a suitable course. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 5 working days to assess your language level.

Aim of the course
To gain increased knowledge of academic writing skills for publishing an academic article. In addition, you will have improved your own written academic article and will be more confident about your own abilities and knowledge.
