COURSE: Open, interdisciplinary doctoral course in August 2021 with a special focus on children’s rights.

In collaboration with the Centre on Law and Social Transformation, we will offer a Child Right Track in the annual doctoral course “Effects of Lawfare: Courts and law as battlegrounds for social change”.

The digital course offers an introduction to the debates on the potential and limits of law as an instrument of social change, and opportunities to engage with some of the foremost scholars in the field, and international research projects currently seeking better answers to these questions.

The course period is 9 August – 23 August 2021 (preparatory period from 2 August). The full course yields 10 ECTS points (participation, paper abstract, presentation and paper (4000-6000 words), the partial course yields 3 ECTS points (participation, paper abstract and presentation).

Child Right Track

The Child Right Track will especially focus on the universally ratified UN Convention for the Rights of the Child and how a supra national convention is understood and implemented in nation states. Main topics include:

• Conceptualization and implementation of children’s rights
• Balancing of children’s rights vs. parental rights and other rights
• The changing relationship between the family and the state
• The functioning and workings of child protection systems worldwide

Professor Marit Skivenes (political science, University of Bergen) is the course coordinator.
