Analyzing Infrastructure Impacts in Asia Through Big Data Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI)

Developing Asia will need to double its infrastructure investment to $1.7 trillion annually over the next decade to maintain growth momentum, eradicate poverty, and address climate change, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This includes $14.7 trillion for power, $8.4 trillion for transport, $2.3 trillion for telecommunications, and $800 billion for water and sanitation.

Infrastructure development could provide an important boost to COVID-19 recovery among developing Asian economies but will require financing solutions that address growing constraints on the use of public funds for projects due to the pandemic. New funding sources are particularly vital for tackling the region’s sustainable infrastructure investment gap, which is equal to 2.4% of GDP and includes financing for climate mitigation and adaptation.

Big data-based evidence of infrastructure’s spillover effects and policy recommendations for optimizing them will be critical to mobilizing private investment growth within the sector

ADBI is seeking original, unpublished research papers on big data analysis of the impacts of infrastructure development in Asia, to be presented during an ADBI workshop. Areas of focus include micro- and macro-economic data and spatiotemporal data from sources such as satellites, mobile phones, Google Maps, social media, and drones. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Measuring the socioeconomic effects of infrastructure projects
• Big data analysis of infrastructure impacts and the factors that shape them
• Post COVID-19 infrastructure financing challenges and solutions

Submission Procedure

Authors should submit extended abstracts in English of at least 1,000 words via this link no later than 09:00 Tokyo time on 19 April 2021. Please include a title, the names and affiliations of the author(s), contact information, an introduction, a literature review, methodology, data, and the expected results. Early submissions are preferred. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified by 30 April 2021.

All extended abstracts must contain only original or review work which has not been published, nor is currently under review by other journals or conferences. Submissions must comply with the Submission Guidelines for ADBI Publications.

Submissions from citizens of ADB developing member countries are encouraged.

Arrangements for Selected Papers

Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to present their work during the related paper development workshop and training workshops to all be held virtually. The dates for the workshops will be announced later.
