Science Communication Training Fellowship

Are you an ARVO Member-in-Training (MIT) that wants to improve your communication skills? Do you know an MIT with a knack for communicating their science? Are you an MIT who loves talking about vision research to whoever will listen?

The ARVO Science Communication Training Fellowship (SciCommTF) trains young scientists to become more effective communicators of vision research to all audiences. The one-year program accepts 20 ARVO MIT members – 10 from the U.S. and 10 from outside the U.S.

During the one-year program, participants will participate in:

  • Quarterly webinars on topics related to communicating science
  • An in-person orientation at ARVO 2019
  • Developing and implementing one science communications or advocacy/outreach activity at their home institution (see sidebar)
  • Attending ARVO Advocacy Day 2019 in Washington, D.C. (only U.S. participants are required to attend, others are invited; two nights of the hotel are covered for this event)
  • Communication and networking with other Science Communications Fellowship participants through ARVOConnect

Upon completing the program, participants will earn a point toward achieving Fellow of ARVO (FARVO) status and be invited to present as a trainer for next year's class.

Applicants must provide:

  • Letter of intent
  • CV
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Letter from a funding source stating support for the Fellow. This funding letter must explicitly state they will cover travel and lodging expenses for the Fellow to attend the ARVO Annual Meeting in 2019 (all applicants).
  • U.S. applicants must also have a letter indicating they will have funding provided to cover travel expenses to the ARVO Advocacy Day in Washington D.C. in February of 2020.
