Immanuel-Kant-Stipendium

Since 1986 the Immanuel-Kant-Stipendium for doctoral students is awarded to those conducting research concerning the history and culture of Germans in Eastern Europe, as well as associated subjects, such as mutual relationships between Germans in the east and their neighbouring peoples.

The BKGE is responsible for the organisation and awarding of the scholarships.

Immanuel-Kant-Conference for Scholarship Holders

Our yearly Immanuel-Kant-Conference for scholarship holders provides a forum for the young researchers to exchange and present their research results. The participant’s conference papers will be published on the BKGE’s website subsequently.

What will be funded?

Doctoral projects dealing with the history and culture of the Germans in Eastern Europe and related issues, especially concerning their mutual relationships with neighbouring peoples.

Where is the regional focus?

Silesia, Eastern Brandenburg, Pomeranian, East and West Prussia in modern Poland and Russia; earlier and current-day settlement areas of Germans in Eastern, Eastern-Central and South-Eastern Europe, primarily in Estonia, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary and Romania.

Who can apply?

Potential applicants should have received outstanding exam results in their academic qualifications. Their planned work is expected to expand the current state of research in their field. Applications will be accepted from German and international applicants, and from university lecturers responsible for students at a German university.

The application for a grant should be informal.

Benefits of the scholarship

A basic scholarship of 1300,- Euro per month is granted for a period of two years. There may be supplementary payments (spouse, children and/or study abroad).
As a rule, our funding will last for two years.

Judging panel

An interdisciplinary academic selection panel appointed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM) will be responsible for the awarding of the Immanuel-Kant Scholarship.

Application deadline and the beginning of the scholarship period in 2019

Application period ends on 31/12/2018 (postmarked).
The scholarship period begins on 01/07/2019. Quarterly payments will occur after this date.
