Introduction
Center for Digital Society is a research center established by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. The institution is created under the concern over the impeccable influence of information technology on the contemporary dynamics of society and politics. The phenomenon triggers new patterns and complexities in the society, and thus requires new approaches in managing such complexities.
CfDS pledged to delve more into the study of contemporary digital society, including related issues surrounding the topic; such as the issues of smart city and urban development. The emphasis is then put on the utilization of technology to shape the society in becoming digitized, as well as to bring solvency to social issues.
Program
Center for Digital Society aims to expand its collaborative research scope by inviting early career scholars to conduct research related to digital society issues. We are looking to work with scholars from all disciplines to take part in our research environment in this fellowship program.
Requirements
- Applicants are open to early career researchers (non-Indonesian nationality) who:
- are currently pursuing their master’s degree (preferably undergoing thesis with a corresponding theme to the topics given), or
- have received their master’s degree in relevant studies
- Fluency in English
- Committed and willing to take part in Center for Digital Society research activities
Responsibilities
- Conduct research related to the given topics
- Contribute to CfDS collective research and academic activities (discussion, dissemination, etc.)

Theme and topics
Our general theme is related to one of our main research themes, that is: The Future Technology and Society. Higher preferences will be given to candidates who are focusing its research on analyzing the social dimension sector of the following research topics:
- Big data and digital society
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital society
- Cloud computing and digital society
- Cybersecurity and digital society
Application
Please submit one original and one copy of a complete application consisting of the following:
- Cover letter (1 page)
- Research Statement
- elaborating on what you think are the key questions to be examined regarding digital society for the next 2-3 years (300-500 words)
- Research Plan for one project
- the plan should address the research question, methodology and timeline for 2 months (1 page each, 1.5-spaced)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Official academic transcript of grades
- Supporting documents (English proficiency proof, etc)
Qualification for acceptance
- By the end of the application process CfDS will disclose the grading and decision which were made by our board of directors. The results would be the following
- 90-100: Comprehensive research plan, strong research statement, supported by relevant experience.
- 89-79: Good research plan, clear research statement, and supported by experience in doing research.
- 79-69: Qualified research plan, satisfying research statement, and supported by studying experience.
- >69: unqualified
