Koc University -Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (GABAM) with the cooperation of the Friends of Music Society in Athens is launching a new research project, focusing on Byzantine Musical Instruments which is scheduled to conclude within a 2-year period. The main aim of the project is to create an elaborate documentation of Byzantine Musical Instruments through the design and production of a web portal that will include by-products such as a fully integrated database for researchers, a digital exhibition for the wider public and educational applications.

In the framework of the project, GABAM will appoint a post-doctoral fellow, who will be the member of the research team and will be fully employed on the ByzantineMusical Instruments project. The Fellowship includes monthly salary, accommodation, travel and health insurance. Thappointed fellow will be able to take full advantage of the facilities and libraries connected to Koc University.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in any of the following subjects:

  • Byzantine Art History
  • Literature or on Medieval Instruments
  • Historical Musicology
  • Music Iconography

with a specific interest on the time period described within the bounds of the research project, ideally proven through published literature. Candidates should be able to read music and be digitally literate. 

The place of work will be GABAM at Koc University's main campus in Istanbul. However, this project will involve traveling to Greece and elsewhere to participate in field work.

Nikos Maliaras professor at the Music Department-University of Athens will be one of the scientific supervisors for this project and the successful candidate will collaborate closely with him.

The study and working language of both Koc University and GABAM is English. However, knowledge of Byzantine Greek iextremely desirable. Knowledge of languagsuch as German will be an asset.

Period

1- year contract with a possible renewal of 1 year
