Call for Papers - Regimes and Societies in Conflict: Eastern Europe and Russia since 1956

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Uppsala University and the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies invite proposals for panels and papers for a two-day conference to be held at Uppsala University in September 2018 with the theme ‘Regimes and Societies in Conflict: Eastern Europe and Russia since 1956’.

Over the last 60 years Eastern Europe and Russia have been the scene of immense political, social and cultural upheaval. This conference provides the opportunity to reflect on the changes in the region that have led from Stalinist dictatorships to the very varied polities of contemporary Eastern Europe and Russia.

Proposals for panels and papers are invited in any area of Eastern European and Russian Studies relevant to the theme: proposals are especially welcome from postgraduate research students and young scholars. To propose a panel or a paper you will need to fill in the electronic proposal form.

There are separate forms for panels and for individual papers.

Panel Proposal

Panels can have 3 or 4 contributors, one of which could be a discussant. Discussants are not a requirement to submit a panel. Where possible, panel organisers should organise a chair for their panel too.

Roundtables should have 4 or 5 contributors alongside a chair.

1. All participants on panels/roundtables must register and pay the conference registration fee.
2. Each meeting room will be equipped with a LCD projection setup and a laptop. If you require any other audiovisual equipment, please complete the box below. No equipment can be guaranteed if requested later.
3. By proposing a panel it is assumed you are free to attend the whole period of the conference. While the program will consider specific scheduling requests it cannot make any promises that it will be able to comply with them. Please make sure that any such requests are included on the proposal form.

To complete this proposal form, you will require the following:

  • Contact details for each participant;
  • A paper title and a c. 250 word abstract (not applicable for a roundtable) for each participant;
  • If a panel member requires a visa, you will need to enter their passport number, name as it appears on their passport, and
