About AHO and FTH
The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) is a specialized university and a leading international architecture and design school that provides education within architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism and design. AHOs fields of knowledge focus on design in all scales; objects, buildings, urban areas and landscaping. AHO is organized into four institutes, and has approx. 700 students and 145 employees.
The Institute of Form, Theory and History (FTH) teaches and researches architecture, architectural history and building heritage. The FTH faculty —counting approximately 30 architects, architectural historians, artists, and philosophers — engages on all academic levels: Undergraduate and graduate levels, and has a particular responsibility for the PhD program. FTH offers an executive Master in Building Heritage, as well as a Nordic executive Master in Architectural Heritage (NORMAK), a collaboration of Architecture School in the Nordic countries. The Oslo Centre for Critical Architectural Studies(OCCAS) is part of FTH.
The Oslo Centre for Critical Architectural Studies (OCCAS) is a center for advanced, humanities-based research into the architectural culture. The centre encompasses an interdisciplinary community of researchers dedicated to the documentation, interpretation, criticism and contextualization of architecture as a cultural, historical, political and material phenomenon. Combining updated theoretical perspectives with thorough archival studies, OCCAS insists on the contemporary relevance of historical research, its critical potential, and its urgent function in understanding the built environments of the present and the future. Through strong international networks and significant research projects such as the HERA funded “Printing the Past”, OCCAS studies the cultural significance of the built world, its historical preconditions and its contemporary status.
Proposed Research Topic
For the upcoming PhD position program looks for applicants with strong and original project ideas within humanities-based architectural research. In particular, it looks for projects that link to OCCAS’ work on interpretation, criticism, mediation, and historiography. The projects must be based on a clearly defined historical material and the applicant must demonstrate his or her mastery of relevant scholarship in the field. Of particular interest are projects that revisit the question of categorization in architectural history and projects that challenge and critique what can be defined as the object of architectural history research.
Academic requirements
- Applicants must hold a masters’s degree or equivalent in a field of relevance for the call.
- Applicants who do not have English or Scandinavian language as their mother tongue must submit documentation of their proficiency in English by the deadline of the application (TOEFL test or similar). Students with university studies where English comprised the major component of the studies are exempted from the requirement.
- Applicants must have some experience from architecture or humanities research and be proficient writers.
The application must include:
- A letter of application describing why the applicant is qualified for this position (maximum two A4 pages.)
- A preliminary project proposal that addresses the above themes, describing intended research questions and methods, of no more than 3000 words and no more than 15 pages and 10MB including illustrations.
- An example of their own research writing
- CV with a full summary of education, practice and academic employment, as well as copies of degree certificates
- List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee

Evaluation criteria
- Applications will be evaluated according the following criteria:
- The formal academic requirements for the position
- The originality, precision, and the archival material they bring forth, as well by their contributions to critical discussions on the relevance of historical scholarship in architecture.
- The clarity and relevance of the submitted project proposal and its relevance for the call
- The quality of the submitted example text
- The strength of their CV and list of publications
Program offers
- The PhD scholarship is fully funded and there is no tuition fee. The salary are NOK 460.900 for a full position. From the salary, there will be a mandatory deduction of 2% as a contribution to the State Pension fund (SPK). Normal employment conditions for state employees in Norway apply for the position.

Formal regulations
The research fellow is required to fulfil the requirements for the training component in the AHO PhD Programme during the employment period.
It is expected and the position require fulltime residency for four years in the Oslo-vicinity. Research stay at a relevant international academic institution is a possibility.
The PhD fellowship will start in September 2018.
