Workshop for doctoral students

Call for speakers at the workshop for doctoral students

During the XIIIth international conference on Gregory of Nyssa in Rome, which was devoted to the Homilies on the Song of Songs, the organisers made the suggestion that half a day should be allocated for graduate workshops. This opportunity for research students to discuss their research with experts in nyssen studies proved very fruitful. That is why we are offering this call for applications from doctoral students to such a workshop during the 2018 conference, which will focus on the Homilies on the Lord’s Prayer.

Workshops are open in order of priority to PhD candidates working on a text by Gregory of Nyssa or on a theme related to his work that may go beyond the topic of the conference. Students working on topics close to that of the conference but via the study of other writers from the IVthe century can also apply (commentaries on Sunday prayer, anthropology and theology of prayer, pardon or issues of edition and translation, etc.).

Doctoral students are of course invited to attend the whole conference. Workshops can take place in French, English, Italian or German and Spanish is a possibility. Workshop proposals (title and abstract of 1 or 2 pages) along with a brief CV and a letter from the student’s supervisor should be sent before 31 December 2017 to the following email address : phdworkshop@gregoryofnyssa.org. For the workshop, a detailed presentation of the PhD (max. 10 p) along with a statement on achievements to date or conclusions on a specific point to be submitted to the discussion.

Call for paper

The XIVth international conference on Gregory of Nyssa will take place in Paris, Collège des Bernardins, from Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th of September 2018. It will focus on the Homilies on the Lord’s Prayer and their reception in the byzantine world. A call for papers is open until September the 30th 2017.

As customary for Gregory of Nyssa’s conferences, each homily will be the subject of a specific lecture, offering a commentary of the whole homily. A call for paper is announced thereby for the other papers (time: 20 minutes), which should deal with the theme of the conference. The following topics are suggested:

  • the art and skills of the preacher
  • the world of the preacher and social and moral aspects of his homilies.
  • The exegesis of the Lord’s Prayer, in relation with the other works by Gregory and the other patristic authors
  • The perspective of the Kingdom (eschatology and present world)
  • The biblical figures in the homilies
  • Illness, health and healing of body and soul
  • Prayer in the homilies
    • In comparison with the other works of Gregory
    • In comparison with the other patristic authors
  • posterity and reception of the homilies in Byzantium
    • exegesis
    • theology
    • Spirituality

Conference venue

The conference will take place at the Collège des Bernardins in the fifth arrondissement of Paris. A Cistercian college whose oldest parts date back to 1248, the building has been renovated in 2008 and now houses the Faculty of Catholic Theology Notre-Dame, the CathedralSchool of the Diocese of Paris and a cultural and intellectual centre.
