Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art 5 Postdoctoral Fellowships 2018, UK

Publish Date: Nov 02, 2017

Deadline: Jan 31, 2018

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Five Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered annually for the purpose of transforming doctoral research in the field of British art and architectural history into publishable form. The fellowships are for six months.

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule. The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Postdoctoral Fellowships are for the academic year 2017/2018 and may be taken between September 2017 and September 2018. Fellowships cannot be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

Scope of Postdoctoral Fellowships

Five six-month full-time Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded. They are offered to enable the Fellow to transform doctoral research in the field of British art or architectural history into publishable form, such as a book, series of articles or exhibition catalogue. Alternatively, the fellowship may support new research arising out of a successfully submitted doctoral dissertation where that research may lead readily to publication.

Eligibility

Postdoctoral Fellowships are designated for applicants who have had their doctoral theses successfully examined within the four years prior to January 2017. Applications will also be accepted from applicants who are able to demonstrate that the final examination will be completed by the end of January 2017. The Paul Mellon Centre reserves the right to withdraw a Postdoctoral Fellowship from a candidate to whom one has been offered on the latter basis, should the examination result in substantive referral or in failure.

Please note it is not permitted to submit a Research Support Grant application at the same time as a Postdoctoral Fellowship application.

Funding

Five Postdoctoral Fellowships of £8,000 each will be awarded.

Fellowship funds are offered either as a grant to the Fellow (if an independent scholar) or to their university or institution to fund replacement teaching or staff costs. The Centre does not pay full economic costs. If a Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award.

Application

To apply for an award access our online system where you can see further information about our award categories and will be able to register with us and start the application process. You do not have to complete your application in one go, but will be able to return to your form and submit your application when you are satisfied with it.
