Winter School - Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute November 5-13 2016, Seoul, Korea

The Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute is an intensive, one-week immersion course in the international history of nuclear weapons in the Asia-Pacific region. This course, led by world-class historians and leading experts, will provide in-depth instruction and discussion on the evolution of nuclear technology, the origins and development of deterrence and extended deterrence theory, regional nonproliferation issues, and nuclear strategy.

The Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute is an initiative of the Nuclear Proliferation International History Project (NPIHP), a global network of individuals and institutions engaged in the study of international nuclear history through archival documents, oral history interviews, and other empirical sources.

Details

The 2016 Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute is jointly organized by the Wilson Center and Kyungnam University. It will be hosted in Seoul, Korea, from November 5^th–13^th, 2016. All instruction will be in English.

Participants will receive full tuition, round trip transportation to Seoul, as well as accommodations and meals during the Winter School. Seminars led by world-class historians and leading experts will:

1. Provide a crash course on the history of nuclear weapons;
2. Discuss nuclear proliferation case studies in the Asia-Pacific region;
3. Immerse participants in the world of nuclear history research;
4. Deliver instruction on how to conduct archival research on nuclear history;
5. Train students to brief historical research to non-academic policymaker audiences.

Eligibility

The Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute aims to train the next generation of experts on the international history of nuclear weapons in the Asia-Pacific. Successful applications will demonstrate experience or interest writing or researching nuclear history and nuclear security topics relating to the Asia-Pacific region.

Applications will be accepted from:

1. Persons enrolled in or who have been accepted to a Ph.D. program in international relations, history, political science, or an allied field, who are working towards or considering a thesis on nuclear issues
2. Persons  who have completed an M.A. degree in international relations, history, political science, or an allied field, who are considering a Ph.D. in one of the above fields.
3. Persons who have completed a Ph.D. program in international relations, history, political science, or an allied field within the past two years, who have specialized on a topic related to nuclear proliferation.

Applications from young scholars living and studying in the Asia-Pacific region are especially encouraged.

Required application materials include:

1. A brief resume or CV (maximum 2 pages);
2. An applicant evaluation form from a professor, supervisor or senior professional colleague who knows you well;
3. A brief abstract (maximum 200 words) of your current academic research;
4. A statement of purpose (approximately 1 page or 400-600 words in length) describing how participating in the Asia-Pacific Nuclear History Institute would contribute to the achievement of your personal, professional, or academic goals;
5. A completed application cover sheet.
