Research Methods in Intercultural Communication
In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of conducting research in the field of Intercultural Communication. Common pitfalls of intercultural and multilingual research and possible practical solutions will be considered. This course combines theory and relevant considerations about research methods with a more practical approach in which different methods of data collection and analysis will be explored and compared.
In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of conducting research in the field of Intercultural Communication. Both quantitative methods and qualitative methods will be covered, as well as the possibility of using mixed methods is discussed. Common pitfalls of intercultural and multilingual research and possible practical solutions will be considered. This course combines theory and relevant considerations about research methods with a more practical approach in which different methods of data collection and analysis (e.g. observation, interveiw, survey and corpus analysis) will be explored and compared.

Lecturers
Yvette Linders (course leader) wrote her PhD-thesis on Argumentation in Dutch Literary Criticism. In her current research on persuasive communication she combines different research methods, quantitative as well as qualitative. She worked as a lecturer in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) and Essen (Germany) before coming to Utrecht. Topics she has taught include research methods, statistics and (cultural differences in) academic writing
Target audience
Background in language and cultural studies, interested in intercultural communication and background from Humanities fields or sciences.
Course aim
To provide students with an introduction to the basics of conducting research in the field of Intercultural Communication.
Study load
Daily 2 x 2 1/2 hour session; max one hour homework per day.
