The Department of Archeology and Antiquity is a multi-disciplinary institution that works for greater cooperation between the disciplines involved. At the department there is teaching and research in the subjects of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archeology, Osteology, Egyptology and Global Environmental History. The department is located both in Uppsala and Visby (Campus Gotland). Egyptology is included as a natural part of our bachelor’s program and in the research environment. A master's program in Egyptology is being set up.
The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at Uppsala University invites applications for a doctoral position in Egyptology specialising in archaeology, cultural history, and material culture available from January 1, 2020. The deadline for applications is September 16, 2019.

The department has an active, integrated research culture with expertise in a series of cross-cutting themes that include the archaeology of cult; urban societies; war, conflict and force; historical ecology; and critical heritage studies. The department is also a leading centre for GIS-based landscape analysis, and has strong research links with many other departments, e.g, Department of Philology ans Linguistics, as well as with the Museum Gustavianum, (the University museum).
The department’s research profile in Egyptology encompasses all areas of study in the subject. Staff members lead and participate in international archaeological projects in Egypt, particularly in the area of ancient Thebes. The subject practises and seeks to develop further collaboration with the Museum Gustavianum, which houses a large collection of Egyptian antiquities as well as the core material of the Scandinavian Joint Expedition to Nubia in the 1960s. These collections represent a major pedagogical asset as well as provide challenging research opportunities for scholars. In addition to archaeology and the study of material culture, staff members in the subject carry out extensive Egyptological philological and linguistic research on written material spanning the entire length of Egyptian language history from earliest times to the Coptic period.
Duties: PhD training encompasses four years. PhD students are expected to study full-time and to actively participate in the activities of the department. Administrative or teaching duties up to 20% at the department may be included, in which case the employment period will be extended.
Requirements: Basic qualifications has one who a) has passed a degree at advanced level; b) completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, and c) have passed awards for 120 credits in Egyptology at the Bachelor level. Competent is also the one who, in another order within or outside the country, acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. For special qualifications, the applicant is required to meet the requirements for the advanced level in Egyptology.
