University of Toronto Weston Brain Institute International Fellowships in Neuroscience

The Weston Brain Institute International Fellowships in Neuroscience will benefit Canada and Canadians by developing leading neuroscientists and enhancing our international competitiveness in the knowledge economy. The Fellowship will provide an award of $60,000 for each selected student (prorated as needed) for up to 3 Canadian graduate students from the University of Toronto conducting translational research in neurodegenerative diseases of aging. This award will enable outstanding students to travel to and work in world-renowned labs to further their research. The goal is to build international collaborations, foster influential neuroscience research and bring enhanced research capabilities back to Canada.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be willing to conduct translational research on aspects of neurodegenerative disease(s) of aging while studying abroad in a world class laboratory for up to one year beginning in the 2016–2017 school year.
  • Be registered as a full‐time PhD student at U of T.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada.

Selection Criteria

Students will be selected based on their ability to represent and advance Canada’s international reputation for academic excellence and collaboration in the field of neuroscience; the impact their research and anticipated outcomes will have on Canada and Canadians; their distinguished record ofacademic achievement; the ability to demonstrate their promise as top‐tier researchers and future leaders of their respective fields, and the quality of the host labs (the lab should be among the world leaders in the students’ proposed research area).

The selection process will also take into account the candidates’ leadership ability and their potential both within academic and broader community contexts, to take full advantage of their international experience.

Applicants may wish to consider study at elite institutions in the UK, such University College London, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, or King’s College London. All short‐listed applicants will be interviewed by a selection committee and Weston Brain Institute representative(s) as part of the selection process.
