Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India. A distinguished scientist and aeronautical engineer by training, Dr Kalam was presented an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Sydney in 2011 in recognition of his contribution to the profession. The Dr Abdul Kalam International Postgraduate Scholarship celebrates his commitment to education, and his endeavours to support outstanding students to develop as future leaders.

The scholarship is:

Open to all international applicants with an offer of admission for a Master by coursework program in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the time of submitting a scholarship application.

Open to applicants with a firm/unconditional offer of admission by the relevant scholarship closing date for the appropriate semester. Students who have already commenced their postgraduate studies, or students transferring from other postgraduate programs are not eligible.

The scholarship shall be awarded on recommendation of the Faculty Selection Panel based on academic merit with a minimum high distinction average or equivalent as indicated by the applicant’s performance in their undergraduate degree.

The scholarship is valued at 50% of the tuition fees for the Master program and year offered, subject to satisfactory academic performance deemed to be a minimum of credit average (65%) each semester. The recipient will be responsible for paying the balance of the tuition fees while enrolled in the program.

The scholarship cannot be deferred and is not transferrable to another Faculty or university. Scholars must not hold an equivalent scholarship simultaneously.

Successful candidates will be informed by 5 June 2015.

Applicants must complete an online scholarship application, and submit their academic transcripts and admission letter of offer to the Scholarships Officer by the scholarship closing date.

To be considered for this scholarship applicants must first receive an offer of admission to postgraduate coursework study in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Sydney. Applications without a valid offer of admission will not be considered. More information on how to apply is available online.

Eligibility

a.The Scholarship shall be open to all international applicants who have an offer of admission for a Master coursework program in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the time of submitting a scholarship application.

b.Applicants must have a firm/unconditional offer of admission by the relevant scholarship closing date for the appropriate semester.

c.Students who have already commenced their postgraduate studies, or students transferring from other postgraduate programs are not eligible.

Awarding of the Scholarship

a.Selection will be based on academic merit. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of a minimum high distinction average or equivalent as indicated by the applicant’s performance in their undergraduate degree.

b.Selection will be made by the Faculty Selection Panel which will include the Associate Dean Education, Associate Dean International, International Marketing Manager and Manager of the Graduate School of Engineering & IT.

c.Candidates must apply for the scholarship by

i.Semester 1 entry: 30 November 2014

ii.Semester 2 entry: 31 May 2015

Note: All applicants must obtain a firm, unconditional offer before applying for the scholarship.

d.Candidates will be offered the scholarship by

i.Semester 1 entry: 5 December 2014

ii.Semester 2 entry: 5 June 2015

e.Candidates offered the scholarship must accept it by

i.Semester 1 entry: 14 December 2014

ii.Semester 2 entry: 14 June 2015

Tenure

a.The Scholarship shall be tenable in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies and shall not be transferable.

b.The scholarship may not be deferred to another semester or year.

c.The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year only, regardless if the Master program entered is structured for more than 1 year, subject to the recipient meeting all the obligations of the program, and subject to satisfactory academic progress deemed to be a credit average (65%) each semester.

d.The recipient will be required to enrol as a full time international student and must retain their international student status on a full time basis throughout their enrolment at the University of Sydney.

e.The recipient must not be in receipt of any other tuition scholarship from the University of Sydney.

Value and Payments

a.The Scholarship shall be valued at 50% of the tuition fees for the program and year offered. The student must be enrolled full-time in the Master program, commencing in either semester 1 or semester 2.

b.The scholarship will be applied against tuition fees each semester, after acceptance of offer for the semester of entry and achieving a minimum credit average in four completed units of study in the first semester of entry.

c.The recipient will be required to pay for their own airfares to Sydney, living expenses, study materials, text books, any ancillary fees (if applicable) and Overseas Health Cover each year.

d.The recipient will be responsible for paying the balance of the tuition fees while enrolled in the program.

5.Additional Conditions

a.In the event of a scholar leaving the program for any reason and not completing the postgraduate program, the recipient may be required to pay back any monies received in the year of discontinuation. This will be subject to the discretion of the Associate Dean, Education.

b.The recipient may not be entitled to a ‘Leave of Absence’ during the duration of the scholarship, unless it is due to extenuating circumstances. This will be at the discretion of the Associate Dean, Education.

c.The Scholarship may be suspended or withdrawn should the Scholar fail to comply with any of the Terms and Conditions outlined above.
