Overview
We will consider the poem in depth to see how the poet manipulates and adapts convention to make something new and radical. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight exists uniquely in an early 15th century manuscript. Written probably in the West Midlands in the late 14th century it narrates the excitement of a quest, the eeriness of the supernatural, and the provocation of the game of love. In this course we will immerse ourselves in the poem, reading it in translation but also engaging with some of the original language. We will consider it possible origins, its manuscript context, its relation to other Arthurian romances, together with an appraisal of modern English translations and how the poem still speaks to audiences after 600 years.

Tutor
Victoria Condie has taught courses on medieval literature and art for OUSSA and currently teaches medieval literature at the University of Cambridge.
Course aims
This course aims to introduce students to the late Middle English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Course Objectives:
- To read parts of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the original Middle English
- To gain an insight into Arthurian romance
- To recognise the ways in which the poet has manipulated the conventions of Arthurian romance.
Teaching methods
All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be expected to:
- have developed an understanding of romance, and particularly Arthurian romance
- have understood the importance of a work which challenges literary traditions
- have engage with the poetics and language of a late medieval text.
Assessment methods
Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.
