Summer School - Creating Paradise: English Gardens and Landscape Design, 1600-1850, 3 - 10 August 2019, University of Oxford, UK

Publish Date: Jan 17, 2019

Deadline: May 01, 2019

Event Dates: from Aug 03, 2019 12:00 to Aug 10, 2019 12:00

Overview

Changing styles of garden and landscape design reflect wider trends and development in art, society, travel and exploration, politics and nationalism, and technology. Between the late 16th and mid-19th centuries in England these factors combined to create increasingly distinctive forms, some of them influential across the globe. Using contemporary descriptions, literature, visual and cartographic sources, journals and accounts, this course explores the social, cultural, political and aesthetic rationale for landscape and garden design in England, emphasising the principles of design, the significance of growing nationalism, the functional role of gardens and grounds, and the influence of key individuals such as Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton.

Tutor

Alan Crosby is editor of The Local Historian and a regular OUSSA tutor. He has taught many courses on landscape history, country houses and garden history.

Course aims

This course aims to explain the rationale behind the changing styles of garden and landscape design and to highlight the emergence of a distinctively English character over the period studied.

Course Objectives:

  • To enable students to analyse gardens and designed landscapes from the perspective of their design principles

  • To help them to position garden and landscape history within the framework of broader social, cultural and economic trends

  • To demonstrate the multi-functional nature of gardens and designed landscapes, going beyond the simply aesthetic

Teaching methods

All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will:

  • be able to visit gardens and designed landscapes with a deeper understanding of their development and rationale

  • be able to compare and contrast the different styles and character of such designs

  • be able to understand the social, economic and cultural factors which have shaped the historic gardens and landscapes which survive today

Assessment methods

Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.
