Summer School - The Church and Secularisation in Modern Britain: A Struggle for Hearts and Minds, 20 - 27 July 2019, University of Oxford, UK

Publish Date: Jan 16, 2019

Deadline: May 01, 2019

Event Dates: from Jul 20, 2019 12:00 to Jul 27, 2019 12:00

Overview

The marginalisation of religion from the centre of public life and the associated decline of personal religious commitment are arguably two of the most significant developments in modern Britain. Our ancestors lived in a world where the church was highly influential in the provision of charity, welfare, education and the law, to an extent which is hard to comprehend today. Drawing on recent scholarship, local case studies and original sources relating to themes including the work of Charles Darwin and Billy Graham, and the impact of the Great War and the ‘Swinging Sixties’, we will consider how secularisation happened.

Tutor

Alistair Beecher has a doctorate in English Local History from Oxford University and speaks regularly at academic conferences and seminars. His research interests are in the church, secularisation and broader aspects of social history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Course aims

This course aims to study the process of secularisation in Britain between 1800 and 2000 and consider the social, moral, intellectual and political factors that re-shaped the role of religion in society over this period.

Teaching methods

All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will be expected to:

  • understand the causes, nature and timing of secularisation in Britain between 1800 and 2000.
  • appreciate the different scholarly views on the factors which contributed to the marginalisation of religion in Britain
  • be able to evaluate and interpret different historical sources.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.
