Overview
We will assess what a range of architects have achieved, ranging over government, museums, the church, commerce and more. We will examine modern architecture applied in the context of historical buildings, where work aims to adapt or enhance their contemporary use. The aim will be to assess what a range of architects have achieved for varying functions such as government, museums, the church, commerce and transport. Case studies will include Basil Spence’s Coventry Cathedral, Norman Foster’s Great Court at the British Museum and his remodelling of the Reichstag for a re-unified Germany, plus Hertzog and de Meuron’s Tate Modern and Rick Mather’s Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. A study visit is included.

Tutor
Keith Hasted studied history of architecture, researching Italian Renaissance palace architecture for his Master’s, and has special interests in cathedral architecture and modern architects’ approach to historic buildings. He teaches on the history of architecture at Oxford Continuing Education, and for the WEA.
Course aims
This course aims to evaluate the approaches to design taken by modern architects working in the context of historic buildings.
Teaching methods
All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course students to be able to understand:
- the architectural approach of the selected architects
- the styles of architecture in use
- the judgement behind the choice of materials – modern or traditional.
And, students will have gained and/or developed the following skills:
- assessing the success of architects from a functional point of view
- assessing the success of architects from an aesthetic and historic point of view
- recognition of the use of particular modern styles – modernist, post-modern, etc.
Assessment methods
Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.
