Post Doctoral and Doctoral Student positions in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The positions are located in the Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics and Technology (MIPT), Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland . Currently MIPT consists of 11 research groups and it offers high-quality training in medical imaging, physics and technology. The Research unit is located at University of Oulu Kontinkangas campus.

Subject field

Cardiovascular diseases are the biggest cause of death worldwide, and almost half these deaths are due to ischemic cardiac disease. Fibrosis is a part of almost all cardiac diseases and fibrotic tissue is present in normal cardiac structures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important diagnostic and research tool for cardiac studies. We have developed and applied novel MRI contrasts without contrast agents to detect cardiac fibrosis.

Requirements and the description of the position

The successful applicant must hold a recent PhD degree (postdoctoral fellow) and a recent MSc degree (doctoral student) in suitable field including biophysics, medical physics, biomedical engineering, or other related field.

Candidates whose PhD thesis has been submitted by the application deadline will also be eligible. Experience in cardiac MRI, working with patients, experimental MRI and programming are considered as advantages. Fluent oral and written English skills as well as good communication and teamwork skills are required. Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, potential in acquiring supplementary funding and teaching experience will be taken as merits.

When assessing the applicant’s qualifications, issues to be considered will include scientific publications, supervision experience, activity in the scientific community and familiarity with the research field.  As part of the FoM, the duties may also include supervising scientific research of BSc, MSc, and PhD students. Participation in teaching within the faculty curriculum and in acquiring research funding is expected (postdoctoral fellow).

The details of the research project will be mutually agreed upon, based on the qualifications, interests, and expertise of the candidate. The duration of the position is for two years.The starting date is Sep 1st, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

A six-month trial period will be effective in the beginning of a contract.
