University of Oslo Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biostatistics 2017, Norway

Publish Date: Feb 01, 2017

Deadline: Feb 28, 2017

Post-doctoral research fellowship in biostatistics

One postdoc position for a period of three years is available at the Institute of Clinical Medicine.

The postdoc position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council through the project “National training initiative to make better use of biobanks and health registry data - #248817” with the overall aim to build expertise in biostatistics in order to utilize the potential that opens up as extensive genetic information becomes available for research within population-based cohorts.

An important part of the project is to establish a structured training and interdisciplinary forum for researchers in biostatistics and bioinformatics.  In total six postdoctoral fellows included in this project will be mentored and trained at the multidisciplinary interface of applied and methodologically driven biostatistics and bioinformatics to meet the increasing complexity of the new era of precision medicine. This effort will be coordinated by Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in close collaboration with the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Department of Biostatistics and Institute Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo (UIO) and the University of Tromsø (UIT).

The proposed project takes advantage of very large datasets and our combined national and international collaborations, to train competent researchers to handle this challenge. The hosting research group at OUS/UIO has for a long time worked on data from population-based studies, in particular the HUNT and Tromsø studies, with an emphasis on pain and neurological diseases including migraine. In the later years, much of this research has been focused towards genetic studies, and the current project will extend our ongoing collaboration with researchers within UIO, NTNU and UiT, as well as international expertise within neurogenetics.

Description

The post-doctoral fellow will focus on characterizing genotype-phenotype mapping in neurological traits, polygenetic effects, develop and apply statistical and machine learning methods for the analyses of high dimensional big and complex data. The candidate will participate in the jointly training of the other postdoctoral fellows in this project.

The post-doctoral fellow will work at the Neurogenetic research unit at Domus Medica, under supervision of professor John-Anker Zwart in close collaboration with participating partners.

The fellowship period is three years. No one can be appointed as a post-doctoral fellow for more than one specified period at the same institution. The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualifications and Personal Skills:

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Successful candidates must have defended their doctoralthesis prior to starting in this job.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an outstanding potential, experience in epidemiology and population genetics. The ideal candidates are able to work effectively as part of a team, but also to develop and pursue independent ideas. The successful candidates are expected to conduct innovative research at the highest international level.

Personal aptitude and good collaborative skills will be emphasized.
