University of Oslo Postdoctoral Fellow in Neuroscience

One position as Post-doctoral fellow (SKO 1352) is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in the research group of Associate Professor Torkel Hafting.

The fellowship period is two years. The position is available immediately.

The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB) pursue education and research to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. More information about the Institute can be found here: link

The IMB has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

No one can be appointed as a post-doctoral fellow for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Job description

A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying neural processing and plasticity is of utmost importance to understand and promote healthy development, learning, and recovery from disease. In our laboratory we study cortical circuits at multiple levels from subcellular structures to network activity in behaving animals. The aim of the current project is to identify the role of the inhibitory neurons in cortical processing and spatial navigation. To achieve this we will use state-of-the-art electrophysiology to record neuronal activity from awake and behaving animals in combination with optogenetic tools to selectively target and perturb specific inhibitory circuits to dissect the role of inhibition on cortical processing.

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with strong interest in cortical circuits. The candidate will use state of the art in vivo recording techniques (large-scale extracellular recordings to investigate cortical microcircuits. Genetic and optogenetic perturbations will be used to identify cell-specific contributions to these processes. The candidate will collaborate with investigators in computational neuroscience at Center for Integrative Neuroplasticity (www.cinpla.org). We offer broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating academic environment.

The fellowship will be for a period of up to two years, with no compulsory work.

Qualifications

The IMB has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in physiology or neuroscience.
  • The preferred candidate has experience from in vivo investigations of brain function in animal models.
  • The research fellow should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. Emphasis will be attributed to team-working abilities and personal skills.
  • A good command of English is required.
