University of Oslo Doctoral Research Fellowships

Two Doctoral Research Fellowships (SKO 1017) in Italian and/or Spanish are available at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, University of Oslo. We seek PhD candidates with excellent research qualifications who will contribute to the project “Found in translation: Southern Europe/Norden.”

In a modern society the text and its translation constitutes a process of meaningful negotiation between cultural identities. This negotiation takes place in different spaces (e.g., public and private, virtual and physical), and at any level of communication (e.g., verbal and visual). Moreover, together with the ideas and meanings of words charged with specific cultural traits, particular national ideas, values and symbols introduced in texts are transformed and resignified by the spaces and circumstances in which a translation is done and disseminated.

Applicants should present projects aiming to discover how Italian and/or Spanish national traits and cultures represented in fiction and other cultural productions (such as any media which uses language, written or oral, including visual and digital artifacts) are transmitted in translation and received by the Nordic audience and/or how the Nordic society is represented in Italian and/or Spanish translations.

Applicants should use interdisciplinary approaches that combine linguistic and literary analysis to a diversity of texts, including trans-media perspectives. The languages considered for the project are Italian and/or Spanish vs. Norwegian (and/or another Scandinavian) language.

The persons appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidates are expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development.

The appointment is for a duration of three years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.
