Doctoral Research Fellowship in Comparative Literature

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Comparative Literature (Cognitive Literary Studies) is available at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, University of Oslo.

Proposals are invited for a doctorate project in the field of cognitive literary study. The doctorate project should be related to at least one of the following strands of research:

  1. the historical dimension of cognitive literary study; in particular, cognitive approaches as applied to eighteenth-century literature (across Europe) and/or cognitive literary study as compared to literary theory pre-1900 which also has a cognitive interest
  2. expanding the notion of "cognitive" into the study of embodiment, emotions and experientiality in connection with literature
  3. the transmedial dimension of cognitive literary study; with particular reference to visual storytelling in graphic narrative, films, computer games or multimodal novels

The successful candidate is expected to write his/her thesis in English.

The doctorate project will be related to the supervisor's work on embodiment and the eighteenth-century novel, cognitive narratology and/or the cognitive dimension of graphic narrative. There will also be the opportunity to embed the project into the existing research environments.

The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral degree.

The appointment is for a duration of three years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.

Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree or equivalent in Comparative Literature or any national literature. Candidates with MA degrees in drama, media studies, art history or psychology are also encouraged to apply, if their doctorate project relates to the strands of research outlined above. The Master's Degree must have been obtained by the time of application.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project's scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
  • The applicant's ability to complete research training
  • Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities

Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.
