UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN 2019 SUMMER SCHOOL

The 2019 Summer School on Understanding Nigerian Cultures: Belief Systems, Identities and Implications organized bt the Office of International Programmes in conjunction with the Institute of African Studies and the Department of Linguistics and African Languages will hold from 19-31 August, 2019.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as research scholars, in all subject areas interested in enhancing their understanding of the Nigerian cultures and languages are eligible to apply.

The primary focus of the programme is to expose participants to important aspects of Nigerian cultures and languages in ways that will achieve the following objectives:

  1. Expose participants to the reality of cultural diversity in Nigeria.
  2. Use Nigeria as a canvass to generate sensitivity to diversity and an understanding of homogeneity.
  3. Expose participants to how to allocate, share and negotiate spaces from the perspective of indigenous Nigerian cultures.
  4. Culture as dynamic, in formation, flux, transition and transformation

The school, to be located on the serene, very hospitable and highly secured campus of University of Ibadan, Ibadan will involve:

  • series of interactive teaching and seminar sessions on traditional Nigerian cultures and languages;
  • demonstrations and performances of some aspects of Nigerian cultures to give participants a first-hand, practical experience of these cultural elements;
  • cultural tours to important cultural shrines in Oshogbo, Ife and Oyo towns;
  • traditional fashion shows to display basic traditional costumes; and
  • showcase of traditional food samples and modes of eating to highlight the implications of these on other aspects of culture in relation to the establishment of solidarity, unity and social order in traditional societies.
