The University of Helsinki annually allocates funding to doctoral programmes for employing doctoral students in salaried employment relationships (salaried positions). These doctoral student positions are designated as full-time work. The aim is that doctoral students employed by the University will complete their degree in four years.

On this page, you will find a step-by-step breakdown of the entire application process. Start here and then proceed to the more detailed instructions available on the website of your chosen doctoral programme.

All the 32 doctoral programmes of the university have one application period. In 2019 the application period is 3–17 September.

The 2019 call includes additional positions earmarked in particular for projects on artificial intelligence and AI solutions in all fields of science and scholarship. The AI positions are available for application in all doctoral programmes.

Before applying

Make sure that you are eligible to apply for a salaried position. You can apply for a salaried position in a doctoral programme if you are currently a doctoral student at the University of Helsinki or planning to pursue a doctoral degree.

If you have already been granted the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, you can apply for a salaried position, provided you have not yet spent a total of four years in the position of a salaried doctoral student.

You can apply for a salaried position either from your own doctoral programme or from another doctoral programme, which suits your research profile. If you get a salaried position from another doctoral programme, you need to ask for the change of doctoral programme (more information about changing doctoral programme). Please notice also that you have to reapply for the right to pursue a doctoral degree if the granting faculty or your target degree change.

If you do not yet hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, you can apply for a salaried position if your research plan fits the profile of the doctoral programme.

If you do not yet hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree, you can apply for the right with the same application. In that case, please carefully read the instructions pertaining to applying for the right to pursue a doctoral degree.

Whether or not you hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree, please read the application instructions carefully. If you are planning to also apply for the right to pursue a doctoral degree, remember to read the relevant instructions carefully and start preparing the required documents well in advance.
