The internationally esteemed Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s most multidisciplinary unit of research and teaching in educational sciences and teacher education. The aim of the Faculty’s research and teaching is to optimally realise the cultural and social potential of people for the benefit of individuals and humanity.

We are now looking for a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER to work in the SAGA project.

The position is for a 2.5-year period, starting 1 September 2019, or as soon as the best applicant is available. The starting and ending dates are negotiable. The researcher will be working with Professors Mirjam Kalland and Kristiina Kumpulainen in the SAGA project, a development and research project that aims to support social and emotional skills among 3–5-year-old children within early education and care. Desirable qualities of an applicant for the position are (a) an interest in research and reporting (b) a willingness to review and summarise existing research, (c) interest and experience in coordinating research and developmental projects, and (d) knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

The duties of a postdoctoral researcher are to perform research in collaboration with other faculty members and to participate in supervising students and in drawing up funding applications. The duties will include coordination of the SAGA project (up to 20% of the annual working time), teaching (up to 5% of the annual working time). The duties also include the presentation of research results at international and national conferences and the preparation of scientific publications.

An appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research, and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have the proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have good analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in oral and written Swedish, and good skills in written and oral English. Good skills in oral Finnish are appreciated.

The doctoral degree must have been granted by the awarding institution prior to the closing date for applications. The salary is based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. In total, the monthly salary will be between €3,100–3,600, depending on qualifications and experience. The appointment starts with a trial period of six months.
