Pediatrics

3 July - 12 July 2019

In 2019 the 26th edition of the Summer School on Pediatrics will take place in Groningen! For two weeks, medical students from countries all over the world will come to Groningen and the University Medical Center of Groningen.

During this Summer School the participants are offered a varied educational program. The school combines clinics and research in many different fields of pediatrics. This is presented in the form of (patient)lectures and workshops given by some of our finest professors and doctors. In addition, students will be divided in small groups to perform research. These groups will benefit from daily supervision by experienced research coaches. The coaches will be present to familiarise the participants with the research process and programs. They will also guide them in their efforts to come up with a proposal that will be presented at the end of the program.

Besides the interesting and challenging educational program, there is a fun social program. During various activities the participating students will get to know each other. They will become acquainted with the Dutch culture and the student life in Groningen. In addition, all participants are given the opportunity to share their own foreign habits during events such as the international cooking event that will take place during the summer school.

The main goals of the Summer School Pediatrics are:

1.     To introduce (bio)medical students to the various fields of clinical pediatrics;

2.     To discuss current limitations/complications being faced today;

3.     To demonstrate their translation into clinical/fundamental research questions.

4.     To get to know medical students from all over the world

Educational Programme

The educational program of the Summer School on Pediatrics focuses on introducing students to the different fields of Pediatrics and showing them the most recent research discoveries that have been published. This is done by means of both International and local guest speakers and interactive workshops with experts. Participants get the opportunity to apply this new knowledge in an own research proposal. To write a proficient research proposal, there will be coaching of supervisors with experience in doing research during the two week program and at the end, after finishing the proposal, the best student will be handed a special award from Genzyme.

The program of the Summer School consists of days that are divided into two parts. Each part of a day focuses on a specific subject within the field of Pediatrics, such as cardiology, infectious diseases, metabolic diseases and oncology. Each topic will be introduced by an expert with a lecture, followed by a hands-on experience in a workshop on the same topic.

During some days participants will have room to work on their research proposal. The research supervisors are experts from different departments of the academic hospital in Groningen, who will guide students that are interested in their field of expertise (always in context of Pediatrics). They are there to coach participants while they work on their research proposal and to share their own experience with research, creating an environment that encourages innovative thinking in participants and hopefully sparks an interest in research. The end goal of this introduction in research will be to assure that participants will continue doing research during the stretch of their career.
