• Be passionate about science and highly motivated

• Have a strong affection to acquire both, biological and informatics knowledge

• Be fluent in written and spoken English

MeInBio has now 13 open PhD positions. Start of the projects will be in September 2020. You are welcome to apply even if you have not finished your Masters program at the moment, but will have finished by September 2020.

All positions will be funded for three years.

How to apply?

For application to one of the PhD projects, please use the Spemann Graduate school of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) application platform. The platform will be open until Feb, 21, 2020.

Please make sure you select the „MeInBio“ radio button during your registration!!

After you have submitted the completed registration form, you will receive an email at the address you provided. It will include instructions on how to continue with the application.

Once you start filling out your application the information you have entered is saved automatically. If you stop entering data for too long the system will log you out. You will have to re-enter your login data to proceed with your application.

All information (scientific interests, letter of motivation, etc.) must be entered in English in the application form. The sections "letter of motivation" and  "scientific interests" are of specific interest for the selection procedure and should receive careful attention.

You need to state for which research group you want to apply, but have the option to name additional other projects you would also be willing to join.

Please make sure to organize two reference letters. Download this referee form, fill in your SGBM number and forward the form to the referees. They should fill in the remaining information and send the form back directly to the address mentioned in the form. Please ensure that the reference letters reach our office by end of February, 2020.

Relevant documents can be uploaded. Please carefully select the documents you decide to upload and do not fill your application with unnecessary material! Final school leaving certificate (Abitur for German students) must be uploaded.

Upon submission of your application you will receive a confirmation e-mail listing all documents uploaded and indicating your registration number. If you do NOT receive such an e-mail, your application has NOT been submitted and you must check what went wrong.

Selection procedure

The group leaders prescreen the complete applications and assemble a short list of candidates who will be invited for interviews in Freiburg. This will happen in March, 2020. The interviews will be held beginning of May, 2020. Travel expenses for interviews will be covered by MeInBio.

During the two interview days, each candidate has one interview (30 min/interview) in English with the principal investigator they applied to, as well as a tandem interview with 2 independent members of the selection committee (30 min).
In addition, candidates present their previous research work to the selection committee. This is a 7-min presentation (blackboard, no Powerpoint!) followed by a 5-min question round. Final selection of the candidates is based on the results of the interviews and the presentation to the selection committee.
