PhD fellowship in the group of Cardiac Genetics at the Biomedical institute
We are offering a PhD fellowship in cardiac function and genetics commencing September or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research
The group of cardiac genetics is headed by Associate professor Morten Salling Olesen. Our lab has a long-standing interest in the genetic component of atrial fibrillation and the disease-causing gene variants. We do large scale genetic studies using GWAS and exome sequencing strategies. We use a combination of human genetics and animal models we study the importance of genes associated with atrial fibrillation (Ahlberg et al. Nature Communications, 2018, Roselli et al, Nature Genetics, 2018)
The student recruited for this project will work on existing mutants available in the lab, as well as generate new mutants and transgenics, to aid in the characterisation of mutation on heart development and function. The techniques used to study the potential phenotypes will include both imaging techniques and electrophysiology, using the zebrafish as a model organism. Basic computer skills and an interest in bioinformatics is an advantage as well.

Start: 1 September 2019
Duration: 3 years as a PhD student (following a 3 month trial period as a research assistant before commencing on the PhD project).
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are:
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teach and disseminate your knowledge
- Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project. Prior experience with zebrafish, as a model organism, and molecular biology and genetics is a requirement. An animal experimental course (FELASA B or C) is mandatory for applying for the position. An interest in electrophysiology and cardiac function is also desirable.
