University College Dublin PhD Studentships 2020, Ireland

The College of Arts and Humanities, University College Dublin, Ireland, is pleased to announce seven generously funded Ph.D. studentships, which will be supervised by our recently appointed Ad Astra Fellowships. 

The studentships are open to EU and non-EU candidates and are for a maximum of four years, renewable each year, subject to satisfactory progress. The award includes full tuition fee waiver, a PhD stipend of €18,000 per annum, and €4,000 per annum towards research costs of the Ph.D.  Students will be expected to be available to commence study in Sept 2020 or January 2021 unless otherwise stated.

You will need to submit the following to the supervisor of the relevant project:

  • Personal statement and CV as one document
  • Proof of English-language proficiency, if English is not your first language (minimum of 8 IELTS) 
  • Writing sample (e.g. an essay or section of MA dissertation)
  • Two academic references
  • A proposal (1000-1500 words plus indicative bibliography).

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of academics. Successful applicants will be informed by email. For the application procedure please see the relevant school guidelines below. The outcome of this competition will be communicated directly to all applicants.

UCD School of Art History & Cultural Policy

1. Cultural Policy
Proposals for Cultural Policy study are welcomed in any of the following research areas: cultural participation; cultural work; culture and place; the formation and making of cultural policy; and the intersection of social policy and cultural policy. In considering these topics, we are keen for studies that regard the representation of disability; gender; sexuality; age; and / or ethnicity. Proposals that are socio-historical and involve qualitative approaches are of interest as well as studies focusing on the island of Ireland. Though proposals regarding other study sites are very welcome. Applications are encouraged from individuals with a background in arts management, cultural policy, sociology and / or art history and history.

2. Art History
Proposals for Art History study are welcomed in a range of research areas of Roman, Late Antique, and Byzantine art, including: cross-cultural or inter-faith engagements in material and visual culture (pagan, Jewish, Christian, Muslim); material-visual properties of texts; the so-called minor arts (glass, silver, textiles); floor and wall mosaics; and theories of the image. Proposals focused on the eastern Mediterranean (modern Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and neighbouring countries) are encouraged, as are proposals that engage with museum collections and cultural heritage issues.

Proposals for World Literature study are welcomed for projects in the following research areas: global, world and/or postcolonial literatures (20th/21st century); world-literature, world-ecology, world-systems; ecocriticism, toxicity, waste; energy humanities, petrocultures, resource extraction ; global climate change fiction, crisis, futurity

2. 19th Century Literature
Proposals for 19th Century Literature are welcomed in the following research areas: literary and economic criticism (especially of the long nineteenth century); Romantic women writers (especially Jane Austen); settler colonial literature (especially Australia and South Africa); emigration/travel literature; book history and history of reading in the nineteenth century; postcolonial literature (especially Anglophone literature of the Global South).

3. Film Studies

UCD School of History
Deadline: 30 May 2020
International and Global History with a focus on Asia/Asians
Proposals for a Ph.D. project in international and global history involving one or more Asian countries or groups in any period from the late nineteenth and/or twentieth century are welcomed in research areas including but not limited to: transnational/international/global histories of Asian migration, Asian diasporas, American-East Asian relations, East Asian-European relations, transnational/international cooperation, international conflict, the politics of memory, international public health, international/global organizations, international relief projects, East Asia’s engagement with international law and the role of political ideologies across borders.
The student will be expected to make use of the €4,000 research budget for archival research in relevant collections abroad.
