About Architecture and Urban Design Studio 2 Summer School

This course provides an introduction to post-graduate studies in Architecture through the vehicle of a five-week studio-based design program. It will use methodological prompts from Patrick Geddes and other theorists and practitioners for experimenting in contemporary architectural and urban design propositions within Edinburgh.

Course entry is sought from students with a degree in Architecture who have an interest in developing into post-graduate education.

This course is available to students with a demonstrable background in Architecture and/or Urban Design who are considering progressing their learning at a post-graduate level and wish to be involved in creative studio output. A high level of drawing skills will provide an excellent platform for obtaining the most from this course. The course is open to different design sensibilities but requires all students to fully participate with a high level of production.

Students must possess a first degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and/or Urban Design. A portfolio must be submitted as part of the application.

For summer 2015 this is our only credit-bearing post-graduate level course, and for those students who are about to enroll on our MSC in Architectural and Urban Design, this course can constitute a 20-credit optional module to be carried forward onto the MSc.

Course Organiser: Dr Dorian Wiszniewski

Registered Architect since 1986.  Professional practice work has won many awards and has been exhibited and published internationally. Academic output primarily focuses on the research-led design and design-led research: exhibited and published nationally and internationally.  Academic papers have been published in China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Israel, Italy, Spain, Turkey, UK, and the USA.  My core research interests are architectural-political-philosophical overlaps on issues of architectural design, representation, and production.  I was Visiting Professor for Architecture and Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sassari, Sardinia, 2011-12.  I was a board member of Architecture + Design Scotland between 2005-2009.  I am a member of the Architectural Humanities Research Association.

The course will present a series of architectural and urban interventions as models, drawings, films, and text that will conclude with an exhibition and presentation.

Students are required to develop an understanding of the range of scales between people, buildings, city, and metropolitan landscape.

The course will combine creative fieldwork, interpretive historical paradigmatic research, and design work, delivered through lectures, seminars, fieldwork, and practical output. Students will work as individuals and in groups.

The course will run each weekday, for up to 9 hours per day throughout the three-week duration, either in the studio or on fieldwork.

Students on the course will be expected to demonstrate an immediate and ongoing productive output that will conclude with the exhibition or presentation of material.

Feedback will be given regularly throughout the Course on either a group or individual basis.

Guest lectures, seminar sessions, and tutorials will take place regularly throughout the five-week course and students will be given detailed course documentation which will provide information on specific activities and required production for assessment.
