Content, Objective and Course Structure

Motion Design: let pictures speak and people move

Between storytelling and post-production, and in addition to after-effects, Premiere and Maya, Motion Designers need quite a bit of organizing skills, planning and strategic thinking. The BA course Motion Design at hdpk offers opportunity to develop these skills and to put them to practice on exciting projects.

The modular structure of the study course Motion Design includes seven semesters, during which you will be expected to achieve a total of 210 credit points, and to attain the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts Media Design (B.A. Media Design). At the hdpk, your accredited courses will focus on design basics, on media psychology and on cross-media models and strategies. In subsequent courses, students will consolidate this knowledge by applying it to moving images, and will attend courses on content development, short film, motion for advertising, music video, motion graphics and post-production, preparing them for professional careers in their chosen field.

The Sample course schedule  gives an overview of the individual course elements, which modules they are part of, and when they are timetabled. During their 5th term, students complete an internship or a semester abroad. The Design course is characterised by flexibility. Due to its modular structure, students can take advantage of all courses and activities offered by the Media Design department. Following your joint basic studies and your specialised main courses, you may also attend courses on Communication Design and Interaction Design BA courses, as illustrated by Module options.

A primary aspect of studying at the hdpk is to participate in the network of the six major bachelor programs Music Production, Popular Music, Audio Design, Media Management, Media Design and Creative Industries Management: cross-disciplinary courses are intended to bring together students from different programmes, providing them with a head start into their careers, for which they will need to cooperate with clients and partners. These cross-disciplinary projects also serve to establish contacts among future professionals, and later on often serve as a first interdisciplinary professional – and personal – network.

Career Perspectives

Motion Design: from images to real life – a lot to do between treatment and release

Motion Designers do much more than audio-visual design of typography and graphic design. Motion Design is a major part of the multi-media developments on the Internet.

Motion Designers are faced with the highly complex challenge of designing and transforming information into narratives. This requires a high degree of organisation, planning and strategic thinking. The BA course Motion Design mediates all professional methods and techniques, from storytelling to completed film, will be trained in project seminars. Motion Designers may choose from a variety of interesting and future-orientated career options, ranging from computer-based animation (2D/3D), camera work from real image to post-production.

Motion Designers either work as freelancers or are employed by marketing and web agencies, media and film productions or TV studios. The process from treatment to post-production includes numerous individual and highly diverse creative stages: content development, storytelling, storyboarding, directing, camera-work, mastering sound and light engineering, animation and video editing, and 3D-visualisation. Motion Designers need to handle tools like Photoshop and After Effects, and need to be able to work in teams as well as independently.

The hdpk BA course Motion Design is an excellent foundation for employment by:

  • filmmakers 2D-/3D-animator
  • editors
  • compositors
  • designers for PR and marketing agencies
  • designers for marketing departments of publishing houses, media and film production, TV-studioscontent development and moving-image-design
