PhD Scholarship in Soil and Water Management

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to apply for a full time four year PhD programme in Soil and Water management (by course work and research) during the academic year starting in October, 2016. The selected candidate(s) will be registered in the Department of Soil and Geological Sciences or in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Technology at SUA

Scholarships

A limited number of AGRA (Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa) scholarships will be available on competitive basis. The candidates selected for AGRA scholarships will receive financial support provided AGRA through a grant to SUA for Advancing Soil Health in Africa: A Regional Doctorate Programme in Soil and Water Management. The AGRA scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, book allowance, stipend, and cost of PhD field research. Qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Female candidates will be given priority for scholarship awards. Candidates with other sources of funding are also encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

1. The applicants, particularly those targeted for the limited AGRA scholarship awards, should already be working with the Agricultural Research Institutions, Universities, Ministry of Agriculture and/or Agriculture sector related Ministries. Candidates with proof of job placement in any of these institutions upon successful completion of the programme will also be considered.

2. Not older than 45 years when enrolling in the PhD programme (i.e. in October 2016).

Admission requirements and mode of application

Applicants must have at least M.Sc. in areas of: soil/agricultural/earth/environmental sciences, land and water management, or any other relevant field from a recognized Institution.

The potential candidates must fulfil the SUA postgraduate studies application procedures (PGS 001), fill in the attached application forms (PGS 002). The applicant has to request two referees to fill the Referee Report form (PGS 003). These forms are also available at the "Further official information" link below this article.

Complete applications must be accompanied by

  • applicant’s short CV (not more than 2 pages),
  • certified copies of degree certificates and transcripts,
  • a motivation letter (one page),
  • a brief Concept Note of the expected PhD research and
  • for AGRA scholarship applicants a nomination letter from current employer. The application letter should give the applicant’s full name, contact address, telephone/fax number and E-mail address.
