The Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is awarding short term scholarships to enable qualified students, early-career academics and researchers in Armenia to participate in international seminars, conferences, summer courses and other relevant activities related to their research field abroad. 

The maximum scholarship award is 2,500 USD. Approximately forty scholarships will be provided per year.

Who is eligible?

Graduate students (Master and PhD) and academics early in their careers under 35 years old wishing to attend international seminars, conferences, summer courses and other relevant activities related to his/her research field.  The awards are open to all research fields, but humanities and social sciences will be privileged.

Scholarships will be awarded mostly for short-term travel grants. In rare cases, longer research/study trips will be considered, for up to three months.

Applications are welcomed at any time of the year, no sooner than six months and no later than two month, before forthcoming events. Submitted applications will be evaluated regularly on a monthly basis.

The objective of the programme is to encourage academic interaction and exchange of knowledge and ideas. Scholarships will be awarded mostly for short-term travel grants. In rare cases, longer research/study trips will be considered, for up to three months. The maximum grant amount will not exceed 2,500 USD. The grant will cover the following expenses in the first instance: registration, accommodation, travel costs and visa fee

Requirements for eligibility

Candidates wishing to apply for a Short Term Conference and Travel Grant to Students and Young Academics in Armenia must meet the following requirements:

  • Be studying/based in Armenia
  • Be under 35 years old at the time of the application
  • Be (i) a Master or PhD degree student or (ii) a researcher from Armenia, wishing to attend international seminars, conferences, summer courses and other relevant activities related to his/her research field. The awards are open to all research fields, but humanities and social sciences will be privileged

Selection criteria

The evaluation will be made according to the academic relevance of the proposed event or research trip to the candidate’s topic, his/her merit, the quality of his/her proposal, the international importance of the conference/seminar and the letters of reference.

Application Documents

  • A copy of the candidate’s passport (main page with personal data) or proof of residency in Armenia
  • Attested copies of university certificates (last academic year), translated into English, if originals are not in English or French
  • If applying to participate in a conference: Title and abstract of the paper accepted for presentation
  • If applying for a research trip: research proposal
  • Letter of acceptance by conference/seminar organizers/ host university
  • Motivation letter explaining why conference/summer course/ research trip is relevant to candidates professional development
  • Letter of support from supervisor(s)
  • A full curriculum vitae including list of academic publications (if any)

Application

Applications can be received throughout the year, no sooner than six months and no later than two months, before the forthcoming event and must be submitted online. If the applicant cannot participate in the conference/seminar/activity for any reason, including non-issuance of visas, the funds granted must be returned to the Foundation. Applicants can be awarded one Short Term Conference and Travel Grant to Students and Young Academics in Armenia per year and can receive a maximum of two grants overall.
