Prins Foundation Postdoctoral and Early Career Fellowship for Emigrating Scholars

The application deadline for the Prins Foundation Postdoctoral and Early Career Fellowship starting in Fall 2017 has been extended to February 10, 2017.

The Center for Jewish History is pleased to offer a fellowship for emigrating postdoctoral and early career scholars through a grant from the Vivian G. Prins Foundation. We invite foreign scholars who seek permanent teaching and research positions in North America to apply for this award, which will support 10-month fellowships for scholars who are at the beginning of their careers. Fellows will be provided with a stipend of up to $35,000 to conduct original research in the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. This award allows the Center to serve as the gateway for emerging scholars seeking to begin a new academic life in North America.

Responsibilities of the Prins Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow

  • Conduct original research using partner collections.
  • Deliver at least one lecture based on the research conducted.
  • Actively participate in the scholarly community at the Center. Each year the Center
    welcomes numerous fellows to work in Center partner collections including graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. The Prins Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to take part in the fellowship program’s bi-weekly meetings at the Center.
  • Acknowledge the Center for Jewish History and the Prins Foundation in all publications resulting from the fellowship.
  • Submit a report upon completion of the Fellowship describing her/his experience as a Center Fellow.

Eligibility

  • Open to foreign scholars from outside North America who seek permanent teaching and research positions and who are at the beginning of their careers. Preference will be given to candidates from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Israeli citizens are not eligible.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the appropriate visa for acceptance of the stipend for the duration of the award. The Center for Jewish History is not a visa-granting institution but will help facilitate the visa application process.

Requirements for application

  • Cover letter stating area of interest, knowledge of relevant languages, and how the project
    relates to the mission of the Center for Jewish History
  • Curriculum Vitae, including contact information, education, publications, scholarly
    and/or museum activities, teaching experience, and any other relevant work experience
  • Research proposal of no more than five pages, including specific reference to the
    collections at the Center and clearly stated goals for research during the period of the fellowship
  • Three letters of recommendation that address the significance of the candidate's work for his or her field as well as the candidate's ability to fulfill the proposed research project. Letters of recommendation should be submitted under separate cover – ideally by email or dossier service – to the address below. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that letters of recommendation are submitted by the deadline.

  • The application deadline for the 2017-18 academic year has been extended to February 10, 2017. All application materials, including letters of reference, must be received by this date for consideration.
  • Announcement of grant recipients: March 2017
  • Commencement of grant period: September 1, 2017 o Conclusion of grant period: June 30, 2018
