Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Neuroscience / Neuroinformatics

Institute of Basic Medical Sciences
Department of Molecular Medicine

ONE POSITION AS POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW (SKO 1352) is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine, for two years with possibility for extension.

The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of academic departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The institute has approximately 340 employees and is located in the Domus Medica.

The position is associated with the Neural Systems Laboratory of professor Jan G. Bjaalie on an EU-JPND project aiming to map the brain wide distribution of pathogenic protein aggregates in genetic disease models and should be filled as soon as possible. The Neural Systems Laboratory employs computational methods, neuroimaging, and neuroinformatics to develop and implement new technologies for analysis of brain architecture, connectivity, and gene and molecular distributions at the level of regions and whole brain.

Job description

The person employed shall contribute to the European Union funded project and be responsible for performing quantitative characterizations of brain-wide spatial distributions of pathogenic protein aggregates in different genetic rodent disease models, and comparing groups with or without potentially therapeutic experimental perturbations. The laboratory develops and uses image analysis, image management and digital brain atlasing methods that will be used in the project. The person employed will interact regularly with the neuroinformatics team responsible for programming and technical implementation and will make use of multiple methods for quantification of various protein markers in high-resolution microscopic section images, including computational image processing, stereology, image registration methods, custom developed web-based database systems and 3-D digital brain atlases. Other key activities include contributions to the accumulation of data in a database system and comparisons with data on brain circuitry available through other databases, as well as data integration aiming at developing a model of the neural circuits affected in each disease model.

Qualifications and personal skills

We are looking for a highly motivated and competent researcher holding a PhD or equivalent who enjoys working in an international and interactive environment. The successful candidate should have a solid background in neuroscience (preferably from subfields neuroanatomy, neuroinformatics, neuroimaging, or neuropathology). Candidates with prior experience from basic research focused on neurodegenerative diseases including histological / neuropathological analyses and use of 2-D and 3-D image registration methods and quantitative histological methods will be preferred. Experience with data management, image processing and stereological methods is an advantage. In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the relevance of the candidate’s background, with regard to research field and research methods, as well as personal prerequisites to carry out the project. The assumed academic and personal ability of the candidate to complete the project within the given time frame will also be considered. Short-listed applicants may be invited for an interview at the University of Oslo or by teleconference.

Requirements

  • Applicants should have a degree equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • The successful applicant must speak and write English fluently
  • Good technological skills and experience with advanced technical (imaging) equipment are required
  • Experience with neuroanatomical analyses and image processing is required
  • The candidate must be capable of taking initiatives and work independently
  • Emphasis will be attributed to team-working, communication and individual suitability for the project

 We offer

  • An interesting and challenging assignment in a research group which runs a state-of-the-art infrastructure for high-throughput acquisition of 2-D and 3-D histological images and digital atlasing
  • A productive research environment
  • Salary in the range between salary range 57-65 (NOK 482 800 – 559 600) depending on qualifications
  • Favorable pension arrangements
  • Attractive welfare arrangements

The application must include

  • The application letter (including a summary of applicant’s scientific work and interest and describing how she/he fits the description of the person we seek)
  • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  • Copies of educational certificates with grades, letters of recommendation
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 referees (names, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)
  • A complete list of publications and all academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee

The application with attachments is to be delivered in our electronic recruiting system EasyCruit. Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University's grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English.
