Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Neuroscience / Neuroinformatics
ONE POSITION AS POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW (SKO 1352) is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine, for two years with possibility for extension.
The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of academic departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The institute has approximately 340 employees and is located in the Domus Medica.
The position is associated with the Neural Systems Laboratory of professor Jan G. Bjaalie on an EU-JPND project aiming to map the brain wide distribution of pathogenic protein aggregates in genetic disease models and should be filled as soon as possible. The Neural Systems Laboratory employs computational methods, neuroimaging, and neuroinformatics to develop and implement new technologies for analysis of brain architecture, connectivity, and gene and molecular distributions at the level of regions and whole brain.
The person employed shall contribute to the European Union funded project and be responsible for performing quantitative characterizations of brain-wide spatial distributions of pathogenic protein aggregates in different genetic rodent disease models, and comparing groups with or without potentially therapeutic experimental perturbations. The laboratory develops and uses image analysis, image management and digital brain atlasing methods that will be used in the project. The person employed will interact regularly with the neuroinformatics team responsible for programming and technical implementation and will make use of multiple methods for quantification of various protein markers in high-resolution microscopic section images, including computational image processing, stereology, image registration methods, custom developed web-based database systems and 3-D digital brain atlases. Other key activities include contributions to the accumulation of data in a database system and comparisons with data on brain circuitry available through other databases, as well as data integration aiming at developing a model of the neural circuits affected in each disease model.
