The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as Physics and Mathematics, to Engineering Mechanics with applications such as Aeronautics and Vehicle Engineering. We also offer university degree programs in Engineering Physics, Vehicle Engineering, and 'Open entrance', as well as a number of international masters programmes.
The project overall aim is to develop an array of nanopores for parallel translocation and detection of single biomolecules. The array is fabricated from a thin membrane using advanced silicon process technology, including electron-beam lithography, where special techniques are used to achieve nanopores of diameters around 20 nm or below. The translocating molecules are labelled with fluorophores enabling parallel optical read-out using a fast CMOS camera. Studied molecules so far have been double-stranded DNA at different lengths which are prepared in collaboration with the division of Gene Technology at KTH. The successful candidate will be involved both with processing in our Electrum cleanroom laboratory as well as with developing the measurement technology and also by performing the translocation experiments. In addition, physical characterization using photoluminescence, AFM and electron microscopy etc. may be used.
The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in experimental physics or similar degree and demonstrated scientific excellence in published works in scientific journals. Research experience from clean-room processing, measurement technology towards electrical and optical measurements of nano-type devices or sensor technology is central to the position. Previous experience from solid state nanopore research is a major advantage for the selection process. The candidate should have good cooperative abilities, good communication skills and good command of English in writing and speaking as he/she will present research results in top conferences and journals. Applicants must be strongly motivated for postdoctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis. The evaluation will be based on the research experience and how well the applicant fulfills the above qualifications.
