PhD position at the Department of Art and Media Studies

The Faculty of Humanities announces one PhD position connected to the interdisciplinary project Face of Terror: Understanding Terrorism from the Perspective of Critical Media Aesthetics, financed by the Research Council of Norway. The PhD position is for a period of 3 years.

Project description

The project pursues its aim of understanding terrorism from the perspective of critical media aesthetics by focusing on the “face” of terror — a term that goes to the core of the communicative and mediated aspects of terrorism: The face is a primary site of contact with fellow human beings and a contested marker of identity, whilst in a broader sense it is also a cultural interface that distributes and redistributes visibility and power. Taking the mediated face as its entry-point, the project investigates the identity work that goes into acts of terrorism, as well as into the cultural responses to them within contemporary media.

The PhD candidate's project will contribute to the project on terrorism in globalized and mediated environments through investigating technologies of the face (identification photography, surveillance etcetera) and/or mediated faces as social and cultural interfaces by way of one or more case studies from contemporary visual media of his or her own choice.
