PhD Candidate Position in Neuroscience

One position as PhD Candidate (SKO 1017) is available at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Division of Physiology, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), University of Oslo. The position is associated with GliaLab, the laboratory of Professor Erlend A. Nagelhus for a period of 3-4 years. The position is available from July 1st 2016 and linked to the project "Developing a novel experimental approach to identify subjects at risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease" funded by the Olav Thon Foundation.

The IMB pursue education and research to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health.

The IMB has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. 

Job description 

A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying clearance of brain interstitial water and waste is of importance for developing novel treatment strategies for many neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s. The present translational project studies functions and dysfunctions of glial cells in relevant animal models. The prime technology is in vivo 2-photon laser scanning microscopy and the project involves image processing and complex data analysis.  

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with interest in translational medicine and Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will use state of the art in vivo 2-photon imaging techniques to investigate the involvement of astroglial cells in brain waste clearance and Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology. We offer broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating academic environment.

The fellowship will be for a period of 3-4 years.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a M.D. and have experience in programing
  • The position is for candidates with documented competence in physiology and medicine. Due to the nature of the project candidates also must document computer skills. 
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. Emphasis will be attributed to team-working abilities and personal skills. 
  • In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the relevance of the candidate’s background.
