Job Description

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in Europe with a large cost to the EU economy. 60 % of deaths in CVD are caused by insufficient blood supply, leading to tissue hypoxia and subsequent cell death. The mode of cell death is dependent on several factors. Necrosis has been regarded as an accidental mode of cell death, leading to release of cellular content, which trigger a sterile immune response. Recently, regulated necrosis, named necroptosis has been described.

The aims of the project are to understand the role of necroptosis during acute myocardial infarction and its role in affecting sterile inflammation.

The PhD fellow will work on several aspects of the project, and will employ advanced molecular and cellular techniques, as well as work with animal models to answer important questions with relevance to acute myocardial infarction and heart failure.

The project is led by Professor Kåre-Olav Stensløkken.http://www.med.uio.no/imb/english/research/groups/heart-physiology/

The objective of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The appointment is conditional upon admission to the research-training programme of the Faculty of Medicine. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and admission approved within three months. The research fellow is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. Please also refer to the regulations concerning terms and conditions of employment for the post as PhD Candidate.
