Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Publications Grants

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule. The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Scope

Publication Grants (Publisher) are offered annually. They are awarded to publishers or institutions to help towards the costs incurred in producing works of scholarship in print or in other media. Grants are intended to make possible publications which would otherwise not appear or which would appear in reduced specification. The following costs may be claimed:

  • Printing and binding
  • Design and layout
  • Images and reproductions
  • Graphics
  • Indexing

Publications Eligible for Support

The Paul Mellon Centre supports scholarly publications, in both printed and online form, within the remit of British art and architectural history as stated above. The Centre also supports books and catalogues of exhibitions or permanent collections of British fine and decorative arts and architecture.

Awards in this category will not be given to cover costs which are the author’s responsibility. An application made by a publisher or institution will not disbar their author from applying for a Publication Grant (Author) for the costs of images for the same project. Publishers and authors may not apply for the same costs.

Funding

Publication Grants (Publisher) are awarded annually up to a maximum of £7,000.

Timing of Application

Publication projects should be ready to go to press or appear online within two years from January 2017. The Centre does not make any retrospective awards for books already published nor will it accept applications for funding for books due to be published before the end of 2016.
