Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Publications Grants

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule. The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Scope

Publication Grants (Author) are offered annually. They are awarded to authors or editors forexpenditure they incur personally for illustrations/images for their publication. An author or editor may claim for:

  • Specific photography and the production of images
  • Acquisition of images, reproduction and copyright costs
  • Production of graphics.

No other costs are eligible for support. Grants do not cover personal living expenses or travel, nor are they intended to support research on the part of the applicant (for which see Research Support Grants).

Publications Eligible for Support

The Paul Mellon Centre supports scholarly publications, in both printed and online form, within the remit of British art and architectural history as stated above. The Centre also supports books and catalogues of exhibitions or permanent collections of British fine and decorative arts and architecture.

Awards in this category will not be given to cover publishers’ production costs. An application made by an author or editor will not disbar their publisher from applying for a Publication Grant (Publisher) for the production costs of the same project.

Funding

Publication Grants (Author) are awarded annually up to a maximum of £3,000. They are made specifically for costs which are the responsibility of the author and are personally expended by him/her. Any award made will be paid directly to the author.

Timing of Application

Publication projects should be ready to go to press or appear online within two years from January 2017. The Centre does not make any retrospective awards for books already published nor will it accept applications for funding for books due to be published before the end of 2016.

Please note:

Authors and Editors of books which have been accepted for publication for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press are not eligible to apply for further support through the Publication Grant (Author) award scheme.
