Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Junior Fellowships

Four Junior Fellowships are offered annually to scholars in the advanced stages of their doctoral research in the field of British art and architectural history to pursue further study in the UK based at the Paul Mellon Centre. The fellowships are for three months.

Scholars wishing to research in the USA are advised to apply to the Yale Centre for British Art awards programme. See "Visiting Scholar Awards" britishart.yale.edu/research, deadline January 2017 for further information.

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule. The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Junior Fellowships are for the academic year 2017/2018 and may be taken between September 2017 and September 2018. Fellowships cannot be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

Scope of Junior Fellowships

Four three-month full-time Junior Fellowships are offered to scholars engaged in doctoral research on British art or architectural history. Scholars should be well advanced in their doctoral research and should demonstrate their need to have an extended period of archival or library research in either the United Kingdom or the United States.

Eligibility

Junior Fellowships are designated for scholars who are already engaged in doctoral research. They will not be awarded to scholars in the early stages of their doctoral research nor will they be awarded for the final stages of writing-up. They are specifically research fellowships.

Candidates may be of any nationality, but must be enrolled in a graduate programme at a United States or other non-British university.

Please note it is not permitted to submit a Research Support Grant application at the same time as a Junior Fellowship application.

Funding

Four Junior Fellowships of £7,500 each will be awarded.

Junior Fellowships are awarded for a period of three months. If a Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Junior Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award.

Application
