Women's Fellowship program

The Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship provides funding to a select list of academic universities that will each award a US$20,000 fellowship to one woman who is interesting in pursuing a PhD and in need of financial assistance. Of that amount, $18,000 will be applied toward tuition costs and $2,000 will cover travel expenses to a conference in the fellowship recipient’s field of study.

In addition, Microsoft Research will create opportunities for each fellowship recipient to engage with Microsoft researchers in their domain of study and connect with each other in a collaborative community.

The following United States universities are participants in the Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship in the 2016–2017 academic year:

Applying for a fellowship

If you are pursuing, or plan to pursue, a PhD at one of these universities and are interested in applying to receive the Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship, contact the department chair in your field of study.

Provisions of the fellowship

  • Each participating university will select a fellowship recipient who is interested in or currently pursuing a PhD at that institution, in financial need, and has high potential for engaging in research in the field of computing
  • The fellowship includes US$20,000 for the 2016–2017 academic year.
  • $18,000 of the fellowship will be applied toward tuition costs, and $2,000 will be allocated toward travel allowance and fees for attending a conference in the fellowship recipient’s field of study.
  • The fellowship is awarded to recipients for one academic year only and is not available for extension or renewal.
  • The fellowship recipient must remain an active, full-time student who is enrolled in PhD-level studies at one of the participating universities during the academic year of the award, or forfeit the fellowship.

What happened to the Graduate Women’s Scholarship program?
The predecessor to the Women’s Fellowship program, the Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship program was created to help women in their first years of their PhD study to cover financial costs and enable them to determine their research area. Since the start of the scholarship program, Microsoft Research has granted financial awards to 70 women pursuing a PhD, which has helped to fund their education and increase visibility within their academic domain.

Beginning with the academic year 2016–2017, the program will evolve into the Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship. The fellowship will create opportunities for women to engage with Microsoft researchers and connect with each other in a collaborative community.

Who is eligible to apply for the Women’s Fellowship?
The Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship is eligible to students entering or enrolled in a PhD program at one of the participating universities for the 2016–2017 academic year.

How do I apply for the fellowship and what is the schedule?
If you attend one of the universities participating in the Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship, contact your department chair for information about the fellowship’s application, review, and selection process as well as the fellowship schedule for the 2016–2017 academic year.

When will fellowship recipients be announced?
Microsoft Research Women’s Fellowship recipients will be announced by each participating university by the end of May 2016. Recipients will receive their financial award beginning in July 2016, depending on your university requirements. Microsoft will send payment directly to your university, and your university will disperse funds according to their guidelines.

If selected, am I required to complete an internship at Microsoft Research?
Internships are not included as part of the award. You may have the opportunity to apply for an internship if you desire but you are not required to do an internship.

Are there any tax implications for me if I receive this scholarship?
The tax implications for your award are based on the policy at your university.

Will intellectual property be an issue if I am awarded a scholarship?
The Microsoft Research Women's Fellowship program is not subject to any intellectual property (IP) restrictions.

May I simultaneously receive scholarships from other companies?
Yes. If you receive a Microsoft Research Women's Fellowship, you may also receive a scholarship from another company or institution for the same academic period.

May I simultaneously apply for a Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship and a Microsoft Research Women's Fellowship?
No. The qualification criteria for the two programs do not coincide.
