PhD student in Chemical Technology with specialization in Multicomponent Adsorption and Diffusion in Zeolites

The research in Chemical Technology at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is focused on development of chemical processes as well as development of materials, especially zeolites, for use in chemical processes.

We are the largest group in Sweden in the area of zeolites. We develop zeolite materials for new applications such as membranes, catalysts, structured adsorbents and sensors. The group is in the international forefront in the area of zeolite membranes.

Subject description

Chemical Technology encompasses the design and analysis of industrial chemical processes and products through experimental and theoretical studies. Of particular importance is the development of materials for chemical engineering applications

Project description

We are now looking for a PhD candidate in Chemical Technology with specialization in Multicomponent adsorption and diffusion in zeolites. The aim of the project is to measure adsorption and diffusion data to be able to predict the performance of zeolite membranes and adsorbents for separation of CO2 from bio- or natural gas.

Duties

As a PhD student you will be trained in scientific thinking and writing. The work as a PhD student is problem focused. You will develop skills in identifying, define, formulate and solve problems of both practical as well as theoretical nature. You will also develop your skills to work with complex theoretical and analytical questions and to integrate these in to current practices. More specifically you will work on measuring adsorption and diffusion data for gas mixtures of carbon dioxide and methane in zeolites and to derive theoretical models that describes the experimental data. These models will subsequently be integrated in more comprehensive models of membrane processes for simulating carbon dioxide removal from bio or natural gas.

The research training shall result in a PhD degree after the equivalent of four years full time research training. PhD students are employed for the duration of the program, typically between four and maximum five years, depending on the degree of departmental duties. Most PhD students are involved in either teaching or having responsibilities for some of the instruments in the laboratory as a part of the departmental duties (maximum 20% of full time).

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an enquiring and rigorous approach to research, together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. You should be able to work both independently and as a part of a team. Good observational and communication skills are essential. A chemical engineering degree and previous experience in zeolite science and/or infrared spectroscopy will be considered advantageous. The successful candidate should also show very good skills in oral and written communication in English. Eligible candidates must have a bachelor or master degree of at least 180 ECTS, including at least 90 ECTS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering. Normally at Luleå University of Technology, the PhD student will conclude a licentiate degree halfway through their studies. PhD students will be employed on a “Doktorandtjänst” for 4 to maximum 5 years (if teaching or other departmental work is included in the position). To be eligible for the position you must be admitted for post graduate studies. Regulations can be found in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap §§ 1-7. Local guidelines for salary exist.
