The Liberation Scholarship Program offers credit mobility scholarships to highly motivated students from Canada who would like to study in the Netherlands for three months and become part of the long-standing historic ties between the two countries.

To celebrate seventy years of liberation and honour the sacrifices Canadian soldiers made for our freedom, the Netherlands has launched the Liberation Scholarship Program, as a token of lasting gratitude and friendship.

Application criteria

  • You have Canadian citizenship.
  • You apply for a study period of three months at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions.
  • Your study period in the Netherlands is between 1 July 2016 and 31 December 2016.
  • You meet the specific requirements of the institution of your choice and specific language requirements.


You will receive a one-off scholarship to cover international travel and initial costs for your stay in the Netherlands, which you will receive one month after the start of your study period in the Netherlands. The amount of the scholarship is:

  • 3 months: € 1,800

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines contributes by offering  a number of return tickets from Canada to the Netherlands. The value of these tickets may influence the scholarship amounts.

How to apply

Apply directly at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions. Institutions can nominate students for this scholarship. They need to this not later than 15 April 2016. Ask the Dutch institution what their application deadline is.

The Liberation Scholarship Program is offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands, EP-Nuffic, Dutch higher education institutions and a select group of Dutch and Dutch-Canadian companies.
